Why I love working in Travel

For as long as I remember, I’ve wanted to organise events for a living. I have always been very career focused and took all of my a-levels around Events Management before going on to study the subject at University. After a year out in the industry, I realised one of the most exciting parts of working in events was organising the events abroad.

I’ve never been the type to want to go travelling (proper travelling). I take my hat off to people that do, but the whole living out of a backpack in hostels on hardly any money just isn’t my kind of fun. I love to travel and see the world but personally, I’d rather enjoy the experience from a lovely hotel with my 23 kg of luggage for a week… So, a career which means I get to do this while getting paid is the perfect job for me. Okay so I am glamorising it slightly, organising events overseas is often extremely hard work; you’re in a country where you don’t speak the language, far away from home in a strange City where you don’t know where anything is and you’re working 18 hour days every day to ensure the event runs smoothly, but even still, for me, there’s no better job in the world.

Reasons I love working in events and travel

  • I get to spend all day researching new and fabulous destinations which nearly all of them pretty much then go on my holiday wishlist
  • Because of all my previous research, by the time I visit those destinations for personal reasons I already know where to stay and what to do

  • My work is pretty cool about me extending my stay when I want to go and explore the City I'm in for an extra day
  • I know all of the new and exciting hotel openings and get invited to go and visit them
  • I know how and where to get the best deals booking flights and hotel
  • I get to stay in beautiful hotels and don’t have to pay!
  • Because of the amount of events I book and the money I/my company spends, I always get treated very nicely by the hotel staff and often get extras like drinks or an upgraded room
  • My friends and family always come to me for advice on where to go on their holidays
  • I get to do, see and experience things I’d never be able to do otherwise
  • It’s opened my eyes to the beauty of the world we live in by visiting different Cities and experiencing different cultures
  • It’s increased by language capabilities, I can understand a lot of French, Spanish and German but I’m not great at speaking it… although being fluent in Spanish is one of my goals for the next few years
  • My geography has gone from barely knowing the capital of Italy to at least being able to name most cities in Europe – big deal for me okay!
  • Just this year, I have visited Madrid, Munich, Nice, Zurich, Rome, Amsterdam and Milan for work, none of these places I had ever been before
  • I get invited on FAM trips to visit destinations and hotels overseas to learn more about the area and why I should organise my events there
  • My knowledge of Europe expands every day, although so does my travel wishlist
  • I get to collect BA air miles which I’m a total geek about
  • I know my way around London Heathrow Terminal 5 with my eyes shut which means I can eat and shop in record time

And most importantly

It makes me love my job every day and realise how lucky I really am…
