Career Guest Post; Working at Cosmopolitan Magazine

Name: Kara Godfrey

Blog: Kara Willow

Industry: Journalism

Job Title: Awards Assistant at Cosmopolitan

Brief description of job role and industry

Helping with the annual Ultimate Women Awards with Cosmopolitan. Alongside this, researching, pitching and writing articles for both print and the website.

An average day consists of...

It’s a cliche but there is no average day! It mainly consists of researching people and facts, conducting and transcribing interviews, pitching ideas and eating a lot of free food! Although days can go on when go to press events after work, but this can be fun when it’s anything from croquet, to film screenings, to new menu tastings.

Qualifications/experience required

None; previous internships leading onto it.

Career progression
It’s been a long two years of interning. I worked at an office job for a year to save (which still gave me key skills such as managing brands and basic office work). I’ve interned at fashion brand THE WHITEPEPPER, GoThinkBig, Brighton Fashion Week, Closer Magazine and then Cosmopolitan. After 6 days interning, I was offered the job. I don’t doubt that writing a blog for just over three years played a big part in showing my commitment to writing and my love of fashion.

Best tip to crack the industry
Intern and be the best damn intern there is! I had to save a lot of money to be able to afford it, as I spent a year saving and then six solid months of interning. So when I was there, I was always first to offer ideas for the website, do anything from buying plasters for someone to writing articles, and always smiling and being ready to do anything. Anyone can get an internship, but the harder part is trying to get a job out of it. Part of mine may have been luck, but you learn from every internship how to make yourself indispensable. I don’t doubt that I was a rubbish intern at the beginning!

Best thing about my job
As cliche as it is, the people. The image of the Devil Wears Prada bitchiness couldn’t be further from the truth as they’re some of the friendliest and warmest people I’ve met. And the freebie table full of posh biscuits and make-up doesn’t hurt!

Worst thing about my job
The deadlines can be tough, especially when you are relying on other people to get back to you and it’s out of your hands. Even worse if you’re interviewing someone who isn’t very chatty.

Either way, being in the Cosmo office with some amazing women, speaking to inspirational people and doing my dream job is still a pinch-me-feeling. Don't give up as it took me three years of blogging, two years of being a graduate, one year of saving and six months of unpaid interning to get where I am!
